The First Puzzle
This is the first version with an actual puzzle and some level design behind it.
I’m also thinking of onboarding here a bit by walling the player with boxes. This way they’ll figure out that you can push boxes by just trying to get out of their box castle.
I added a one more complication to the puzzle with the yellow key and door. I liked yellow as the final solution, as it stands out from the other colors much more. You automatically notice the yellow door and key first, and start to unravel the puzzle from the end.
The red key is still at the heart of the first puzzles in the earlier builds. It’s the first thing the player needs to learn, and the rest is easy. The red key can either be pushed out of the room and picked up and swung into the door, or it can be pushed into the door from the inside. I’ve put the box in the corner there so when you hit it, you realize how the key can get into the door if you just repeat.
I got a lot of feedback about how you couldn’t push the keys into the locks, so that was fixed later.
Also the goal of getting to the duck is an idea that was born here. More on that later.
